The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Poughkeepsie (UUFP) has a long-standing commitment to working on human rights and environmental and social justice issues in our neighborhoods and around the world.

The UUFP Social Justice Committee (SJC) keeps the Fellowship membership abreast of current social and environmental issues and sponsors forums, workshops, and letter writing campaigns for the membership and the community at large.

Past and present UUFP/SJC projects include CROP Walk, Mitten Tree, Habitat for Humanity’s annual Gingerbread House Sale, the Great Hudson River Cleanup, supporting the local animal shelter, and working with our youth on Trick or Treating for UNICEF. We also provide a monthly meal to the homeless at the Hillcrest Homeless Shelter and collect

personal items for its guests.

Projects of national and global significance have included providing workshops and informational sessions on global warming—including hosting a speaker trained by Al Gore’s Climate Project—and hosting “Voice of the Uninsured” as we kept the membership abreast of health care reform. UUFP/SJC proudly sponsored a student attending Bard

College as part of the Iraqi Student Project, an international effort to help Iraqi students who otherwise would never be able to attend college.

One of the Fellowship’s proudest moments came when our former minister, Kay Greenleaf, put herself on the front lines to marry same-sex couples in New York State. We stood with our previous minister on the

steps of the New Paltz Town Hall as she went inside to face the judge and court.

We generally meet at 7pm on the first Wednesday of the month, prior to the Social Justice Forum. Please feel free to join us! We welcome new ideas and visions!

The Fellowship has been involved in social justice ever since it began.

In 1968, the Fellowship joined with four other local faith communities to sponsor the development of affordable housing for area senior citizens. INTERFAITH TOWERS completed construction in 1974, and Fellowship members still participate on the Board of Directors for the complex.

The Social Justice Committee has adopted the following goal, in conjunction with the UUA’s Study/Action question on ethical eating:

“The Social Justice Committee will review, educate and explore with the membership and local community the concept of ethical eating and its ramifications on our lives as humans, animals and the environment. The ultimate goal of this process will be to change our behaviors to reduce our negative impact on the environment.”

The UUFP is utilizing the resources made available through the 2008-2012 Congregational Study/Action Issue on Ethical Eating: Food and Environmental Justice. For a link to the UUA's initiative, please click here.

The Fellowship also co-sponsors events in the Poughkeepsie community with other congregations and organizations. For one example, click here.
